One of the best things about radio…

I’m really happy about this trip, the in-studios have been great as have the people here at Gigantic. I realized something today. One of the best things about radio…or about radio at KEXP I guess…is that time that a band, usually they are the unsigned and up and coming bands….that come up either here or in Seattle and are setting up for an in-studio and really excited about it. They get to take a break from the world that supports them and play music… they take the day to day jobs to support themselves so they can make music. For a small period of time they get to get together and play their songs for thousands of people at once. The station gives them an outlet and the great listeners give them an audience and for a moment….just a short moment…..they get to shine and play and be creative.

Then the second best moment is when they are done and they don’t know anyone is watching them and they and any of their friends or people who help with the band talk about what they just did on the air. You usually hear laughing, voices a bit higher pitched and a lot of shaking of heads and hands…..and you sense that you not only just got to experience the art and passion of these people but that maybe you just gave them that extra push…that extra support that will help them soldier on in this very hard life of trying to be a musician and live your life at the same time.

Very few can make a living at it and a great majority of the artists you hear on KEXP have to balance many things to give us their music. When you hear them after, when you hear them talking about this chord or that chorus or just how nervous they were, you….I guess I…..pause, smile and am reflective about what we have here at KEXP. Just how special and just how unique it is to be able to play the music we do and like this trip in NYC, having so many bands play for you…..and just like the bands, most times, I never want that moment to end.

Today on KEXP, we had Pablo on the show. I’m not kidding when I say it was one of my favorite in-studios I’ve had. It just blew me away to hear all these new songs from a band not many people outside of NYC had heard. Beautiful. We’re offering it as today’s podcast. Sign up and check it out. Dylan in the Movies played a very cool dark set on the show. Funk from the Budos Band and sweet sweet music like on the Morning show today from Alpha Rev.

It’s going well here at KEXP, I hope we’re making you proud.

Today’s slide show is up and hit the Streaming Archive if you missed any of the performances.

I love that I ended up flying out from Seattle back to NYC before I got to attend my first KEXP in-studio. Dylan in the Movies was fabulous. They gave me three CDs! Love ‘em. Can’t wait for Elvis Perkins & Essex Green tomorrow! Thanks, guys!

One of the best things about the Internet is that I can stream KEXP into my ears all day at work. I didn’t realize how much I missed you guys. Was a faithful listener during the KCMU days, but left for love and icier pastures. John in the Morning, memories of hot cups of early AM coffee you stir (no pun intended, I think…).

KEXP makes me happy, what more can I say?
