They knocked my socks off!

Mike Johnson and the Evildoers knocked my socks off in-studio yesterday. Their sounds was so dense, textural and gritty. I loved it! And, it’s no wonder they sounded so amazing. Not only is Mike Johnson an outstanding songwriter but it was like having a supergroup in studio. Mike was the bassist in Dinosaur Jr. for a long time. Early on, he was in the Oregon band Snakepit (They remind me a bit of the Wipers). And, he is also responsible for the stark acoustic sound behind Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan’s beautiful solo albums. He’s a busy man. He also played in local groups Juned and Caustic Resin. Mike’s on his 5th solo album now, Gone Out of Your Mind (Up Records), which might be my favorite so far. And, that’s saying a lot because the others kick ass. One of the many reasons I love the new album so much is the guitar work of, not only Mike, but of Bret Netson, who was also in the band Caustic Resin and is currently in Built to Spill. And, that brings us to guitar meister Jim Roth, who actually plays bass in the Evildoers, but slashes away on guitar in his other band, Built to Spill, and whose lineage includes bands such as The Delusions and Goody Blick and the Country Kind. That leaves ace drummer Jason Albertini, formerly of the band Duster and who currently also plays in the band Helvetia. Quite a pedigree in this band. And, the sound, it could not have been better. Check out the Streaming Archive (it was on 5/25 at noon).
