I’ve always had a soft spot for The Band… My parents were big fans and my Dad gave me his vinyl copies of Music From Big Pink and The Basement Tapes when I was very young. Plus, my Grandmother still lives in up-state New York, not too far from Big Pink… Dylan’s work with the band always puts a smile on my face, so I hope you enjoy today’s Dylan feature, written and produced by Michele Myers. This is the story of Big Pink, the big house in the country where Dylan worked with the Band. The Band’s Robbie Robertson reveals one of the secrets to Dylan’s songwriting.

The Band was on the cover of Time Magazine on January 12, 1970. In the story written by Jay Cocks, the music of The Band was characterized in this manner, “They once played hard-driving, ear numbing rock. Now they deal in intricate, syncopated modal sound that, unlike most rock but like fine jazz, demands close attention and rewards it is vith a special exhilarating delight. When the Band plays it is not for a trip but a musical treat.” They were amazing to watch and lsiten to in person.

Stephen, I went there on at trip from Europe and found it with the description on the back cover and a little help from locals. Took an hour or so. That’s the way it should be imho. The trip and the search are part of the experience. In order not be considered a jerk: As far as I remember, make a right when driving from Woodstock to Bearsville.

Want some trivia? We expected West Saugerties to be a village as they are in Europe. Sign says “village starts here”, then it’s houses and streets all pretty next to each other, then sign says “village ends here”. We drove straight through to Bearsville until we realized that West Saugerties is really houses hidden in the woods and spread out over a few square miles.
    We had a problem…

    With equal respect,

I live near Saugerties and i go to Woodstock often. I’m going to find ”BIG PINK” this summer and just dream about that glorious time in 1966/67 when the BAND & DYLAN played and recorded in the tiny house. I think I’ll take a few photos of me in front of the house too…..
