Ever since junior high, I’ve been a huge Cocteau Twins fan. I bought their CD box set before I even owned a CD player — even though I couldn’t actually play the discs, I just had to have them in my possession! Even geekier: every New Year’s Eve, I would carry around a walkman and my Blue Bell Knoll cassette, so that at 11:58 pm I could start listening to “A Kissed Out Red Floatboat” thus ending and beginning the year with something beautiful playing. (Cheesy, I know, but hey, I was only a teenager!)
Well, yesterday just increased my list of “reasons why I love KEXP”, and that’s because I am surrounded by people who are just as geeky as I am!
Like Lisa, Kevin’s assistant, who brought her “Pearly-Dewdrops’ Drops” 7″ single to be autographed, and who shamefully confessed to stealing a Cocteau Twins album back in her younger, less-scrupulous days. She and I pretty much monopolized poor Mr. Guthrie’s attention, causing the in-studio to air a little bit later than its scheduled 4:00 pm timeslot! (*blush!* Sorry!) During his set, we both kept exchanging looks of wide-eyed amazement over his gorgeous songs. Lisa even got teary-eyed!
And, of course, Kevin, who was so nervous and flustered that he slipped up and called him “Robyn Hitchcock” during the interview! (Cheryl had played “I’m Only You” from the Storefront Hitchcock soundtrack right before Kevin’s set, so that combined with his excitement equalled an embarassing moment.)
But Robin couldn’t have been nicer about it all! He was so gracious with his time and attention, and treated us all to some unreleased music, and to a track from his new album Continental (out now on Darla Records).
