Rodrigo y Gabriela in-studio.

Rodrigo y Gabriela at KEXP, 8/14/06

I really enjoyed the live session on my show last night with Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Originally from Mexico City, they met playing in heavy metal bands, and moved to Dublin in 1999 to busk on the streets. They developed a remarkable and original guitar style, a potent mix of latin, rock and jazz, that mixes super quick and melodic lead lines by Rodrigo, and hyper-rhythmic guitar by Gabriela, playing both fast chords and polyrhytmic patterns on the body of the guitar. They are on one of their very first tours of the USA, performing at Jazz Alley Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:30PM. Their new album, produced by veteran British rock producer John Leckie, was released earlier this year in Europe (and has been a huge hit in Ireland), and comes out in early October on ATO Records. Check out their live performance at our Streaming Archive, starting at 7PM, on 8/14.
