Day 4 here at CMJ in NYC. The crew was in better shape today knowing that (A) they weren’t out all night for halloween and (B) we have our biggest day yet in the studio.
During Fields in-studio we learned that KEXP was named CMJ:
Station of the Year Internet Station of the Year Best Team Effort
This is great news and its so fitting that we were all here working in the studio and couldn’t make it there to see the win(s) and that what we’re doing here is such a great team effort, which we’re doing on line for the world at the greatest radio station in the world.
Hot Chip showed up about the same time as myself early this morning with tons of gear and decked out in both a Hooters and Ozzy shirt. Impressive. The band set up and took a while to do so with all that gear so the late start was the trend all day….but we didn’t care, its worth it for what we got. Hot Chip KILLED it….maybe the best in-studio of the broadcast. When they busted out the New Order cover in the middle of the song I know life was good.
After that I played some Squarepusher and they asked who was playing and were happy to hear it on the station….
Foward Russia showed next and set up and blew everyone away not just with there insane energy but sense of humor as well. The interview was so funny…and the drums were destroyed so many times our great photographer Doron had to keep putting the drums back together DURING the performance. It was impressive and we thank him for the double duty.
I should also mention a great show here in NYC, “New York Noise” is taping today and tomorrow so you had that added into the mix. We have 30 to 40 listeners as well each instudio so the energy is pretty great.
Band 3 of 5 today was Tokyo Police Club who kept the late start trend in tact making sure they were warmed up nice and proper and trust me, they were on fire. Once again we saw the yelling and chanting that we’ve been seeing in so many of our in-studios this week. They blew through 6 quick and furious punk/pop songs.
Fields showed up but their gear didn’t….which is always a problem. But they warmed up, tuned up and played great. Not only that, looked great. Damn, we’ve had a lot of good looking bands up here. Not that looks matter but when this many good looking people are coming by, you tend to notice. Same with our listeners, good lookin’ peeps. I loved their set.
We finished the day with Low Frequency in Stereo, a band out of Norway that we were introduced to right before heading over to New York…which funny enough was running late! Dear lord man they rocked. I mean…holy christ on a cracker that blew me away. I’m not kidding, we’re so lucky to see bands like this!!! Listen to the performance on today’s Live Performances podcast. So by the end of the day it was about 9 hours of sweet sweet music.
Heading to the hotel for rest and to get ready for day 5! BIG day of instudios…..what a great week
