Today in Music: new songs from Spoon

A lot of news and announcements about the “music industry” today, including yet ANOTHER major label crackdown and ANOTHER consolidation impacting a couple bands you might just be familiar with like The Decemberists and Radiohead. There is some good news however! Read on…

  • Here’s something for everyone that’s waiting patiently for some new music from Spoon, courtesy of You Aint No Picasso. Live versions of a couple new songs have surfaced:

  • The rumor has been floating around for a while now, but it sounds like it might be true. The Police are reportedly rehearsing in Vancouver for an upcoming reunion tour!
  • A few items of note from Aversion today… M. Ward is set to release an EP in February. Despite the sudden shutdown of their label V2, the Mooney Suzuki’s new album will be out soon.
  • Get ready… Capitol and Virgin are getting set to merge.
  • Record labels continue to crackdown on 30+ year old vinyl bootlegs on eBay.
  • The Beastie Boys are recording their seventh album and are preparing for a backlash from fans at next month’s Good Vibrations Festival in Australia.
  • Cool piece on Gimme Shelter, a video that readers of Melody Maker could send away for. The video features Wedding Present, Jesus and Marychain, Sonic Youth, and others. Download the audio here.
  • Fans of indie giant Other Music in New York will be excited that they’re launching a digital music store.
  • Nice review of Deerhoof’s new record Friend Opportunity from Music For America, an awesome not-for-profit.
  • Happy birthday to Lucinda Williams, she’s 54 today.
  • Last but not least… Badly Drawn Boy announced a tour of Europe and North America, with a stop at Neumos on March 26.
