Dancin’ on an Imaginary Valentine

We imaginary girls heart our good friend, Jenny George. She’s a fabulous woman who loves and support local music, and a fashionista to boot. We also consider ourselves very lucky to even know her, as she is a childhood Leukemia survivor. You’d never know from looking at her healthy, vivacious self now, but she spent years in chemo in her youth. But to hear Jenny George tell the story, every day she had to endure chemo was made a bit easier, because she was allowed to bring her walkman. And every time those headphones went over her ears, they were cranking Duran Duran. And here you thought you were the biggest Duran Duran fan of all time…? Not a chance. Jenny George kinda takes the idea of childhood superfan-dom to the next level.

To honor what Duran Duran meant to her past, and to help other kids who are suffering with Leukemia, she’s spending her birthday – Valentine’s Day – raising money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. The big event is a “Dancing on a Valentine” party at the Crocodile, a night of Duran Duran covers as performed by members of tons of great local bands, including Harvey Danger, Peter Parker, Speaker Speaker, Say Hi to Your Mom, Partman Parthorse, Argo, Sirens Sister, Central Services, the Lonely Forest, and so many more.

And really, who doesn’t heart Duran Duran? igLiz was always a John Taylor fan, while igChar really dug Simon LeBon. igDana says, “Duran Duran sucks! Journey rules!” But then, what does she know about good music anyway?

Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, The Chauffer, Please Please Tell Me Now, Lonely in Your Nightmare, The Reflex, New Moon on Monday, Save a Prayer… Holy cow, we’re excited! Say what you will about the band being over-hyped pretty boys, they knew how to pioneer New Wave and take it to a whole new (sexy) level. We know our local music community can only add to the sexiness. Right, fellas?

Also – note that this is an early show. Bands go on at 8:30. So come right after work! If you want pre-sale tickets, here ya go, or you can get ‘em at Sonic Boom.

Speaking of sexy, if you’re attending a Valentine’s Day Duran Duran Local Indie Rock Superstar Extravaganza, you’re gonna need something extra gorgeous to wear, right? Good thing Velouria in Ballard is having a trunk show this Saturday (2/10) as part of Ballard Art Walk. Not only will they have awesome jewelry from local jewelry designer Amy Bengtson, but all fall and winter handcrafted clothing and jewelry will be on clearance. Here’s your chance to find that perfect necklace or cute skirt at a steal, girls… and guys, here’s your chance to get some special for that (not imaginary) girl in your life. Ahh, love!

And don’t forget – Three Imaginary Girls will be making a guest appearance on Audioasis this Saturday at 7p! We’ll be debuting some of our favorite local tracks of the moment, including songs from The Femurs, The Shaky Hands, and Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. Tune in!

Save it till the morning after,
