Today in Music: White Stripes, David Vandervelde, the National, Mates of State, Winter Pledge Drive!

The new White Stripes album is going to be called Icky Thump, from the British slang “ecky thump.” It took them all of three weeks to record and will be released as soon as corporately possible. Thanks also to Stereogum for posting this video of Jack White singing “I’m Slowly Turning Into You.” It’s a short clip from the Icky Thump recording sessions, but a nice a little taste of what’s to come…

      my friend in portland just introduced me to a great new band from oakland: HIJK. that’s right, what a name. like the alphabet.

      i’m excited about this band and am wondering if anyone else has heard of them. they used to be called Hijack The Disco. anyone?
