Song of the Day:

Every Monday-Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. The podcast features exclusive in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that KEXP DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is by The Besnard Lakes and is found on their 2007 album The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse on Jagjaguwar:

The Besnard Lakes – Agent 13 (MP3)

After self-releasing their first album, Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes are now reaching wider audiences with their independent label debut, and thankfully so. The husband and wife duo of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas pouplate their complex aural landscapes, almost prog-rock in structure, with rich, reverb-laden Beach Boys-style harmonies. At only eight tracks, the album The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse nevertheless is a complete listening experience, accessible enough to listen to while cleaning your house but also rewarding enough to strap on the headphones and tune out the rest of the world.

Music News:

We are beyond thrilled to have Rufus Wainwright in our studios today. Tune in to the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters at noon today to hear the interview and exclusive live performance. If you’d like to go back later to listen in, you can go back for the next two weeks on our Streaming Archive. Here’s a video of “Going To Town” from his album Release the Stars due out next month:

  • It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to hit the records stores and pick up your new release. As always, Largehearted Boy has a list of this week’s new albums. Here are a few mp3’s to get your billfolds lubricated:
  • Future Clouds & Radar – Drugstore Bust (MP3)

    Ola Podrida – Cindy (MP3)

Patti Smith – Gimme Shelter (MP3)

Mavis Staples – On My Way (MP3)

The Veils – Under The Folding Branches (MP3)

The Detroit Cobras – As Long As I Have You (MP3)

    iLiKETRAiNS – CiTiZEN (mP3)

Charlotte Gainsbourg – The Songs That We Sing (MP3)

  • If you’re as interested as we are in Patti Smith‘s new release of covers, go over to Pitchfork to read her interview, in which she demonstrates great patience with her young interviewer in discussing her own youth, her optimism for the world and, of course, her new album.
  • Jack White is a busy boy: not only is the next White Stripes album Icky Thump due out June 19 (more details about that here), but according to Billboard, Jack will be joining The Raconteurs crew, Brendon Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler in Nashville to record the follow up to Broken Boy Soldier. Expect the sophomore release to be bigger and better: says Jack, “We have a lot bigger ideas about certain things.”
  • Interpol is being very secretive about their upcoming release, and who can blame them amid the rash of album leaks (like the new Elliott Smith collection!). At least, Aversion was able to squeeze out a release date of July 10, and Stereogum has just revealed the track list.
  • A band who shares similar interests as Interpol, The Editors, have announced their next album’s track list and details. An End Has A Start will be released on June 25. You can watch a preview video on their MySpace page. Here’s an older video for “Munich”:
