Song of the Day: Plus/Minus – Fadeout

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. The podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is by Plus/Minus and is found on their 2006 release Let’s Build A Fire on Absolutely Kosher:

Plus/Minus – Fadeout (MP3)

Plus/Minus (+/-) began when James Baluyut extended himself from his brother’s band Versus, which is currently on hiatus. Taking with him another Versus member, Patrick Ramos, and a new drummer, Chris Deaner, Baluyut has developed a sound all his own by contrasting angular post-punk guitars with lighter acoustic ones, jerky drums rhythms with electronic drumbeats, and melodic structures with math rock moments. Baluyut manages to tie it all together and make it pleasantly palatable with his soft voice.

Here’s a video for another song on Let’s Build A Fire:

Isn’t this a repeat? I remember this being a Song of the Day back in December or around there.

Good observation, Ryan, but actually, on December 11, Cheryl hosted this song from our NYC broadcast from Gigantic Studios during CMJ.
