Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. The podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is by Bright Eyes and is found on their 2007 release Cassadaga on Saddle Creek:

For nearly ten years, Omaha’s Connor Oberst has recorded under the name Bright Eyes. Although some critics considered his early work to be unfettered adolescent “babbling,” many fans were drawn to the raw emotional intensity that has remained a hallmark of Oberst’s music. Over time, Bright Eyes has developed a more focused sound but has also never shied away from experimentation. Nearly every album begins with or contains a segment that is nearly unlistenable, as if daring the audience to turn it off. Recently, Oberst has turned his attention toward more political issues, having joined the “Vote for Change” tour in 2004 and then performing “When the President Talks to God” a year later on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Here’s a video of Oberst performing that song on the day he conceived it to an audience at ULU:
