Song of the Day: Great Northern – Home

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “Home” by Great Northern, which comes from their 2007 album Trading Twilight for Daylight on Eenie Meenie Records.

Great Northern – Home (MP3)

Despite their moniker, Great Northern hail from sunny Los Angeles, which is revealed through their smooth, kicked-back sound and warm fuzzed-out guitars. Begun by long-time friends Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte, Great Northern maintained the evenly split male/female dynamic as they picked up drummer Davey Latter and bassist Ashley Dzerigian to fill out the sound. At various times their sound recalls Elliott Smith, Earlimart, Grandaddy and Silversun Pickups. If you’re a fan of any of these bands, there will be plenty to love about these great southern Californians.

If you’d like to know more about Great Northern, go to their MySpace page to view an informative EPK and this live recording of one of their earliest songs, “Babies”:
