Song of the Day: The Shins – Sea Legs

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Sea Legs” by The Shins, which comes from their 2007 album Wincing The Night Away available on Sub Pop.

Formed in Albuquerque, discovered by Sub Pop in San Francisco, and now living in the Pacific Northwest, The Shins have certainly moved up in the world. Beginning with the first album, Oh! Inverted World, whose “New Slang” still elicits shrieks of ecstasy from ever growing crowds, The Shins have built upon an instantly recognizable sound and added more complexity and maturity with each new album, which really just means that they’re experimenting more with the pop song structure. But don’t worry — there are hooks aplenty on Wincing the Night Away, as you’ll hear on our Song of the Day podcast, as well as on this new video:
