Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “The Ghost Of You Lingers” by Spoon, which comes from their forthcoming album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, due on July 10 from Merge Records.
Spoon – The Ghost Of You Lingers (MP3)
Formed by singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno fifteen years ago, Spoon was often compared to The Pixies and Sonic Youth, but it didn’t take long for the Austin band to find its own voice. Through five albums and several EPs, Spoon developed a groove as indebted to soul and Motown as to its post-punk predecessors. With each consecutive effort, Spoon has tried news sounds and structures, but it is Daniel’s raw, plaintive voice that continues to be the anchor. 2005’s Gimme Fiction was a creative hallmark for Spoon, and, from listening this appropriately haunting track, it’s safe to say that 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga will take it another step farther.
