Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “Invisible” by Modest Mouse from the 2007 release We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, available on Epic Records.

Perfecting the model they crafted with Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Modest Mouse now toe the line between commercial success and maintaining their decade-old fan base like no other band in music. With a wealth of buzz left over from their previous record, the new album leaking, and the addition of former Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr, We Were Dead… shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Charts. On the new album, lead singer Isaac Brock utilizes, like never before, the contrast of his call-to-arms vocals with the songs’ beautifully complex pop melodies, creating high energy music similar to other indie mainstays, like Arcade Fire. Modest Mouse received guest vocal assistance on several tracks from The Shins’ frontman James Mercer. And just an extra tidbit for those not glued to American Idol, “Float On” was covered by the cast a few months back for a Ford Mustang commercial. For the latest, check out the Modest Mouse website and MySpace page.
