Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Telling Lies†by Great Northern from their 2007 album Trading Twilight for Daylight on Eenie Meenie Records.
Great Northern – Telling Lies (MP3)
KEXP listeners should be getting familiar with this SoCal quartet by now. Their many layers of rich pop melodies have been on our airwaves constantly since the album dropped. As part of the Ship Collective, a creative community in SoCal that includes Silversun Pickups, Sea Wolf, Earlimart and other musicians, as well as directors, clothing designers, etc., this band has been in good company for a while. Acquiring Davey Latter, former drummer for Earlimart, and Ashley Dzerigian on bass, Great Northern steamrolled through SXSW 2007 and their current tour, expressing a love for the road that should prove promising to fans across the country. While the band currently finishes off their tour out east and down south, expect to see them touring for quite some time; I think they like it. While their website and MySpace page can tell you the rest, here’s a video for “Just a Dream,†performed live at SXSW.
