2nd Annual Kids Dance Party @ Neumo’s, June 17
by John Richards

I showed up to Neumo’s about a half hour before the dance party and was already blown away at how cool the day was going to be just based on what a great job our volunteers and staff did setting it up. The beauty of doing this at a club is that you get the late night, cool vibe of a live music venue mixed with a lot of Father’s Day decoration! Arlie, Tiffany I were able to get out and do some dancing before anyone showed up. Which was mostly just us taking turns spinning Arlie around and around until we both got sick. Kids don’t seem to ever get sick spinning around like that. I wonder when we lose that ability?

As we looked outside a line of kids and parents was starting to form and questions started being asked of the club staff like “can we bring strollers in?” You haven’t lived til you’ve seen some grizzled club veterans who’ve probably never been into work that early be asked a question like that.

Darek was on FIRE as the doors opened and people started to pour in. He is a great DJ but the blend of awesome upbeat tunes in a way that both kids and parents could get down was so sweet. Art With Heart were set up upstairs and right away had kids sitting down and getting creative with them. It was a nice thing outside of dancing for the kids and parents to be involved with.

As the place filled I got up and introduced Jeromeskee and Joe Rawk from the WORLD CHAMPION Massive Monkees crew....just like last year they showed off some serious breakdance skills and then taught the kids how to do the same. It’s so incredible to see that out on the club floor. A HUGE thank you to them for being a part of the event again. We’re lucky to have them.

Arlie was a great co-host as he ran from the entrance to the dancefloor to upstairs dozens and dozens AND DOZENS of times. He also ran into the ladies room a few times and made a couple breaks for the exit. His nap time is 1-4 (same as the event) so he was on a 3rd and maybe 4th wind. When his best friend Rowan showed up, Arlie was into a 7th wind and there was no stopping this duo. They spent a great deal of the day on stage. I feel like Arlie might be up on a stage for real one day.....

After another set from Massive Monkees, Riz took over and as I told the crowd, I had to wait til I was in my 20′s to see him live and our kids get to see him now which made all of us great parents! So true really. He, of course, ruled. Once again you have a “moment” where I’m standing there looking at Riz mix and all there great kids and parents getting DOWN on the dancefloor and I just smiled ear to ear.

As our great staff kept everyone going (Carol and Quilty rockin’ the cupcakes, DJ Shannon and Cyrus all over the place making sure everything was working, Mel in charge and keeping it all going...on top of countless volunteers) the day went on and strong til 4pm and we dads, kids and moms headed home to rest. I think it’s safe to say, we’ll do this again next year (and mothers day!)

A BIG thank you to Verite (Jody!), Blackbird (Nicole!), Nuemos, KEXP, Darek, Riz, Amy Lindsey, Mel, Quilty, Carol, Cyrus, Shannon, Massive Monkees, Art With Heart and everyone else I’m forgetting who were a part of a GREAT event. I love this station.

What a great event!!!!! My son, Rhys, and I had a blast, dancing our bottoms off, slurping down juice boxes, and popping gummy treats and mini cupcakes. Thank you thank you thank you to KEXP, the sponsors, Art with Heart (we love our paper balloon and heart necklace), NEUMOS, and everyone who attended. In all honesty, it was one of the best Father’s Days ever.

I had fun for the second year in a row! This year one kid did all art, and another was hogging the dance floor.

    Thanks for the fun.
