Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is All for Love by Sean Hayes from the 2007 album Flowering Spade, available on Ambient Egg.

Sean Hayes – All for Love (MP3) Sean Hayes, a true self-made musician, entered a proper studio for the first time to record Flowering Spade, his fifth album. Despite his long-time, go-it-alone philosophy, Hayes’ street credit granted him access to jazz and post-rock scenesters from both coasts who’ve performed with the likes of Tom Waits, Tin Hat, and Cake, just to name a few. Hayes sports a rich vibrato akin to singers of the old-time music he represents on his albums. Obvious comparisons have also been made to freak-folk mainstager Devendra Banhart. Though the classic singer-songwriter image is now stuck in your head, Hayes’ background in acting will have you singing a different tune. Check him out in a small venue near you.For tour dates and further info, give Hayes’ website and MySpace page a look. Here is a beautiful rendition of “Flowering Spade,” performed live in LA earlier this year:
