Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is “Ungawa” by Chow Nasty from the 2007 album Super (Electrical) Recordings on Omega Records.
Chow Nasty - Ungawa (MP3)Once you hear the sports cheer meets tribal chant chorus of “Ungawa,” you just won’t be able to stop singing it all day. The trio composed of singer/guitarist Damon Harris, bassist Joey Enos, and multi-instrumentalist Zac Hewitt formed in Chicago and soon moved to San Francisco where they have since become a local favorite, nominated in 2006 as Best Electronic/Experimental Band in the Bay Area. Although “Ungawa” has been circulating since 2005, it appears on the debut
Super (Electrical) Recordings, which was released last week. Produced by Peanut Butter Wolf, the album is an addictive blend of blues rock, funk, punk, disco, and everything else that makes you want to boogie. Check out the video that originally created the buzz:
