Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Gimme Some Motivation by Delta Spirit from the 2007 EP I Think I’ve Found It! on Monarchy Music.

This San Diego quintet attracted a lot of attention touring with Tokyo Police Club and labelmates Cold War Kids. Blending Americana with Blues and Soul music, Delta Spirit create a rollicking show that will have them headlining in no time. Wary of overproducing, these guys take the energy of their concerts and translate it onto their records, avoiding the pitfall of many bands worth your money live but worthless in the studio. To stay busy and to attract more praise, Delta Spirit blazes through California in July in support of Dr. Dog.

According to the band’s most recent update (today!), they’re “back in the studio finishing up the last bit of recording for our record,” which will be their debut full-length, “at the cabin again in the beautiful mountains of Julian (San Diego.)” For more updates, check out the band’s website and MySpace page.
