Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Everything’s Different
by Zeph & Azeem from the 2007 album Rise Up on Om Records.
Zeph & Azeem - Everything’s Different (MP3) Following a rich heritage of great DJ/MC combos like Eric B. & Rakim and the more recent
Aceyalone & RJD2, Azeem and DJ Zeph create consistently groundbreaking hip-hop. In years past, Azeem has been using his extraordinary wordsmithery in the spoken word and slam poetry realms, even going so far as to create a one-man play entitled
Rude Boy, which was extended 18 shows due to its success. Nothing goes better with great lyrics than great beats. DJ Zeph, in addition to his solo material, has been steadily working the remix circuit, creating quite a name for himself. Both men now claim San Francisco as their home and the innovative Om Hip-Hop as their label. While many major labels could have altered Zeph & Azeem’s sound for commercial success, the people at Om know not to mess with a good thing, instead using their promotional machine to get experimental, genre-defying music to a wider audience. Incorporating everything from electronic and reggae to soul and latin, Zeph & Azeem truly are genre defying.Currently touring the eastern seaboard, these guys will also appear at this year’s annual
Scribble Jam in Cincinnati, OH on 8/11. Check out their
MySpace page for song previews and videos, including this one from The Mezzanine in San Francisco:
