Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is El Microphono by Mexican Institute of Sound from their 2007 album Piñata on Nacional.

Mexican Institute of Sound – El Microphono (MP3)By day a VP of A&R and a marketing man for EMI Mexico, Camilo Lara continues his marketing campaign well into the night, selling crowds of people his wondrous hip-hop, dub, and Latin rhythm melds under the name Mexican Institute of Sound. Lara’s marketing skills have paid off in other regards as well, landing his music in popular outlets like cinema, television (ABC’s Ugly Betty), advertising (Dos Equis), and even gaming (EA’s upcoming FIFA 2008). Hailing from Mexico City, Lara gets help with his latest from members of Argentina’s Babasonicos, Tom Tom Club (including Chris Frantz, formerly of Talking Heads), and Japan’s Fantastic Plastic Machine. Currently slated for a few shows in Mexico City, MIS is (if you’re lucky) headed for a city near you. Keep up on his MySpace page for all the details. For a dose of Mexican Institute of Sound’s energetic live show, here’s Camilo Lara backed by his live band at a private concert at Salon 21 in Mexico City:

I LOVE Mexican Institute of Sound, and bought the new album “Pinata” at Sonic Boom the other day. Thanks to KEXP for turning me on to them!
