Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Marissa Nadler‘s
Silvia, which appears on her 2007 album Songs III: Birds on the Water on Kemado Records. This version was recorded live in the KEXP studio on 6/27/07.
Nadler’s third full-length, Songs III: Birds on the Water, speaks of mortality, loss, and failed love the same as her previous albums. This time around, however, the sounds are bigger thanks to production and arrangement from Espers‘ Greg Weeks. While Nadler’s past efforts highlighted her twelve-string finger-picking and mezzo-soprano vocals exclusively, this album involves electric guitars, cello, and mandolin, just to name a few instrumentals provided by Weeks and other Espers bandmates. Deservedly, her attempts at other artist’s songs have become popular over the past year, including Leonard Cohen’s
Famous Blue Raincoat, featured on this album. Her cover of
No Surprises, available on her MySpace page, found its way onto Stereogum‘s OKX: A Tribute To OK Computer, available as streaming audio here.
In June, Marissa Nadler stopped by KEXP during her summer tour consisting mainly of record store appearances. You can hear the full performance as part of our Live Performance podcasts. This month, she wraps up the record store tour and kicks off a nationwide tour an 8/23 with a stop at Seattle’s Sunset Tavern on 9/1. Meanwhile, here’s an in-store performance of
