Nothing says summer like a weekend filled with shows, icons, and sunshine. Our recommendations this weekend involve a bit of each…
The Helsing Junction Sleepover
The Helsing Junction Sleepover is an annual event presented by K Records (founded by indie-pop icon Calvin Johnson) with the folks at Helsing Junction, an organic CSA farm near Rochester, Washington. This year’s sleepover runs this weekend (August 17-19) and will include everyone’s favorite summertime activities: music, films, swimming in the Chehalis River, and camping in the orchard.
Friday night’s festivities includes performances by Karl Blau and Mirah as well as a late-night outdoor film screening of “Future So Bright” (with a live soundtrack by the film’s maker Matt McCormick).
Saturday has afternoon and evening music performances (Kickball, Tender Forever and more) and afternoon indie film screenings. Sunday has music performances starting at 10a with Kimya Dawson and Mt. Eerie taking the stage in the early afternoon before the event wraps up.
Food for the event will be provided by the Gleaners and Food Not Bombs, as a fundraiser for their valiant activities.
Saturday, 8/18, KEXP BBQ: Blue Scholars, Cloud Cult, Pela, The Cave Singers, The Blakes, South Lake Union Discovery Center Lawn
Of course, you don’t need us to tell you that the always amazing KEXP BBQ this Saturday. Help support your favorite (we’d say, iconic) radio station by participating in the BBQ event of the season. Great grilled snacks, icy cold beverages, and a fascinating mix of music genres from five of the most dynamic bands around… it’s enough to make even an imaginary girl’s mouth water, especially when the live music is coming from swoon-worthy Seattle boys the Blakes or from snappy smart wordsmiths, Blue Scholars. In case you have heard, the Blue Scholars are shaking things up a bit by performing with an eight-piece band. We have no doubt it will be spectacular.
Crazy awesome Harvey Danger party, Crocodile
If you’re not worn out from a weekend in the sunshine, make sure you head out to the Crocodile Monday night, where the ever iconic (and always wonderful) Sean Nelson has a special night planned for Harvey Danger fans. Sean and Jeff Lin will play a special “unplugged” set of Harvey Danger classics as well as some brand spankin’ new tunes stripped down to their acoustic guitar and piano finest. In Sean’s own words, “it sounds really good to strip these songs down to their bare essentials. The arrangements are quiet, but not mellow. Maybe it’s mature; I don’t know. It’s not that mature. I’ll still be telling dirty jokes in between songs. [Sample punchline: “Igot a better idea: let’s *walk* down there and fuck *all* those cows!”]”
If that doesn’t make for a glowing reason to go out on a Monday night, we don’t know what does.
