Three Imaginary Girls Recommend: Another Best Fest in the Northwest

Hot on the heels of Bumbershoot comes yet another great northwest music festival, this one held in Portland: Musicfest NW! So head down to the city of roses for music and ice cream and Hutch Harris, oh my!

You’ll be able to catch a lot of the Musicfest NW’s performers on KEXP (they started featuring performers when the fest started on yesterday) – but here’s our picks for Saturday (September 8th) ‘cause it’s filled with so much musical goodness we can hardly take it.

How can a person possibly choose between The Thermals (at the Crystal Ballroom), Okkervil River (at Berbati’s Pan), and Richmond Fontaine (at Dante’s) — ALL of whom are playing at the same time at different venues.?!? It is a decision of Bumbershoot proportions.

Since we can’t offer much consolation in choosing where to be when the evening’s headliners hit the stage, shall we discuss the evening’s earlier offerings?

Make sure to catch subtle gazings of New Zealand cuties The Brunettes at the Crystal Ballroom at 9:00 pm. They’ll win you over with their boy/girl duets and catchy tinkering piano. They’re playing a Sub Pop records showcase at the Crystal Ballroom along with comedian Eugene Mirman, Helio Sequence, and, of course, Portland’s own The Thermals. Seeing them (and Helio Sequence who perform earlier in the set) in their home city will surely be a crazy dance party and concussion of indie-rock and roll.

If you’re looking for something outside the Sub Pop family, head to see Jason Lytle, former frontman/mastermind of Grandaddy at Berbati’s Pan. Is there a person amongst us who hasn’t fallen pretty to his sweet whisperings and gentle breeze harmonies? Also on that bill is Damien Jurado – another romantic that will strum his perfectly tuned heartstrings to everyone’s delight. Both of these sets lead up to the swoonworthy Okkervil River stage show.

Even sweeter than all of that… there’s been talk that the famous Portland Ice Cream Man (also known in some circles as “The King of the Dreamsicle”) who will make an appearance or two at the festival. So get your dollars out and and practice your schoolgirl screams. Don’t fret, the final reward of ice cream will sooth your raw throat.

And if you’re feeling nostalgic for last weekend, relive the magic by reading our exhaustive Bumbershoot coverage.
