Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Peacebone by Animal Collective from the 2007 album Strawberry Jam on Domino.

Animal Collective – Peacebone (MP3)

This sometimes quartet composed of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin, has released their most approachable album yet. Strawberry Jam, another production effort of Scott Colburn (who also tackled Feels, the People EP, and Arcade Fire‘s Neon Bible — and who has also been an engineer here at KEXP), matches Animal Collective’s eclectic nature with the poppier side of Panda Bear’s most recent record. The song structures are more disciplined, more discernible, and the freak-outs, while still freaky, aren’t quite as freaky as before. In the end, it’s an album that’s sure to please the diehard fan, most of us folks toeing the line, and a good number of newbies as well. In addition to the new album, Animal Collective has been staying busy with their own record label Paw Tracks, releasing Panda Bear’s recent solo effort as well as Avey Tare’s.

Get to Neumos on Friday 9/14 to see this band, one of today’s most experimental and forward thinking. Diehards can also check them out 9/15 at Vancouver’s Commodore and 9/16 at Portland’s Roseland Theater. For details, head over to the band’s MySpace page. Since we’ve already shown you the anything-but-peaceful video for Peacebone earlier on the blog, here’s a live performance of the song from the Malta Festival at the end of last year:
