Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is
Waiting on the Stairs by Pela from the 2007 album Anytown Graffiti on Great Society.
Shortly after Pela’s performance at the KEXP BBQ here in Seattle, the band finished their tour with a sold-out show at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom. That performance and capacity crowd capped off a summer of rave album and show reviews from coast to coast. Sadly, yet most exciting, Pela is taking a break from touring — aside from a show here and there — to record their second album, entitled Rise Ye Sunken Ships, which should come out late spring/early summer 2008. In other developments, Pela’s drummer, Tom Zovich, has decided to remain in the band after originally accepting an
offer he couldn’t refuse. As the band steps away from the public eye for a while, keep track of goings-on over at their website and MySpace page. One of their few shows is coming up 10/18, again at the Bowery Ballroom. The lineup includes 1990’s, Tiny Masters of Today, and British Sea Power. You can also hear a brief interview along with several acoustic tracks, including
St. Clyde the Cop (a song off the new album) here, courtesy of Shifted Sound. And for those who weren’t fortunate enough to see it live, here’s Pela performing the Pixies‘
Holiday Song, live at Easy Street Records just before the KEXP BBQ:
