This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is
From Nothing No Where by Pinback from the 2007 album Autumn of the Seraphs on Touch & Go.
Consisting of prolific songwriter Rob Crow and Zach Smith, Pinback has created quite a stir in the Indie community, particularly since 2004’s Summer in Abaddon. Much like that album, Autumn of the Seraphs rewards listeners after multiple listens. Though their haunting lyrics and proficiency with melody are immediately striking, this is a band that strives on subtleties. Much like their previous release, Seraphs was self-produced, but this time around the band has acquired guest drummers Chris Prescott (No Knife) and Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From the Crypt) to expand their limits and push the album more towards their live sound. On a side note, the band’s not-so-secret love for Star Wars has spawned a video game entitled November Flight that is cheesy yet enjoyable and, if video games aren’t your thing, it’s set to songs from the new album. Check the game out here. Pinback will be performing at the Showbox 10/22. For more visual stimulation, check out the band’s website and MySpace page, as well as this video for
