John in Chicago: Is it day 2 or day 3?

Stereo kids

Day 2 and 3 in Chicago…Day 2 blends into day 3 because there was a long day, a long dinner and free beer and a party involved. Plus no flash on my iphone so i was iunable to take iphotos of iparty.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

That’s the kind of week I’m having.

We went out last night after the Jose Gonzalez in-studio to the best veggie place I’ve eaten at in some time. It’s called the Green Zebra. Incredible. I don’t even know what I was eating. Then it was a trip to Darkroom for sweet sweet listener party action. Which also meant free beer. It was a great night and a big thank you to 312 who provided the beer and food for our listeners. From there Cheryl, Kevin Suggs and I took a cab and headed to the hotel so I could crash on the couch and watch “Five Days” on HBO. Man, that was some seriously depressing shit. Then I realized I smelled like smoke and praised my hometown for not allowing that in clubs. I’m told Jan ’08 for over here! Great news as we plan on heading back in ’08.

Today is the new and local bands day on KEXP. What is great about coming to other cities is we can do what we do in Seattle. We expose and highlight up and coming bands….Kinectic Stereokids came in from all parts around here….one from Flint and the rest from around different parts of Chicago to play a GREAT set…finishing with an epic version of “Explosions Were Heard”.

The Jai-Alai Savant came in next and I’m kicking myself that we haven’t had them on sooner….just amazing.

The Morning Show ended with cookies being delivered from Touch and Go Records. We finish today with Mason Proper and The Narrator. Then a little more site seeing, maybe another run around Grant Park and an early flight……don’t worry I’ve already secured an “A” pass this time.

Sunglasses check. Wallet check. Mixing board check.

The view from my seat

Buttons and knobs

More wires

Constant fuel

This is the view outside our studio, I’m going to try and crash there after the show
