Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week we are featuring songs by bands who will appear on our CMJ broadcast next week. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is 10 Dead Dogs by Wild Sweet Orange from the album We Have Cause to Be Uneasy on Earfood Records.

Wild Sweet Orange – 10 Dead Dogs (MP3)

Insert all of the preconceptions you have about a Birmingham, AL, folk-rock group then throw in some of David Lynch’s eerie mood music along with some atmospheric noise-rock, stir, and you’ve got Wild Sweet Orange. A quintet consisting of Garret Kelly, Chip Kilpatrick, Matt Parsons, Taylor Shaw and songwriter/lead guitarist Preston Lovinggood, WSO has long been an underground KEXP hit. Last year the band performed, with great reviews, for the epic New Year’s John In The Morning At Night extravaganza. Currently without a label, the band has been touring it up, breaking hearts and taking names all along the way. Catch their full set from CMJ 10/19 at 10AM broadcast and streaming live on KEXP. Following CMJ, WSO continues their tour with The Whigs and The Broken West. In the meantime, check out the band’s MySpace page and this video for 10 Dead Dogs, performed live at Birmingham’s now defunct Moonlight Music Cafe:

“Belief, believe in me, cause I don’t know if reasons ever gonna see, why love would come to die to leave.”

This band can play, write, and it is all the better live. True performers.
