Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is
Outside Chance by Heavy Trash from the 2007 album Going Way Out with Heavy Trash on Yep Roc.
Heavy Trash consists of Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray. During tours with their former bands, Jon (Blues Explosion) and Matt (Madder Rose and Speedball Baby) took part in jam sessions backstage, sharing their passions for rockabilly. A side project was born with 2005’s self-titled Heavy Trash album. Two years later, the guys are back with a bigger more expansive sound thanks in part to the Sadies, who provide backing duties on half the album, and Denmark’s Tremolo Beer Gut and PowerSolo. Heavy Trash provides all the punk, rockabilly and Americana that followers of these two gentlemen will recall with the weirdness lever cranked a bit higher. Not wanting Heavy Trash to feel like a day job, Spencer and Verta-Ray have kept the touring to a minimum, choosing oddball locations over big-buck venues. If you’re in Seattle, you can check them out 11/17 at Chop Suey with PowerSolo and the Fucking Eagles. Until then, catch up on all the latest by viewing the band’s website and MySpace page.
