Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Walters
by Pinback from the 2007 Album Autumn of the Seraphs on Touch and Go.
Pinback has never been an it
band, instead remaining on the radar but at the back of the brain. With two guest drummers and the use of electronic beats, the core duo of Rob Crow and Zach Smith has thoroughly expanded their sound and their production techniques, creating more layers and reasons to listen. This particular track provides the musical adaptation to the unbelievable true story of Larry Walters, a man who in 1982 attached a patio chair to 40-some weather balloons and reached the unintentional altitude of 3 miles. Though many references have been made to Walter’s flight, most notably on Arrested Development and the movie Danny Deckchair, none add to or complement it quite like this song. The band is about to wrap up their tour of the states before heading overseas through the end of November.
