Live at KEXP Volume 3 is only available through the end of the year. We are absolutely thrilled that our compilation of live in-studio performances includes track #8 – Cloud Cult‘s cover of Bob Dylan’s classic song “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Here’s what John said about their live instudio performance recorded in NYC at the Museum of Television and Radio in September 2005:
“Cloud Cult – This in-studio took place when we were doing remotes at the Museum of Television and Radio. It takes place in pretty much an office space so when you could pull some magic off in that room it was pretty sweet. Cloud Cult showed up in bare feet and good spirits, plugged in suddenly everyone paid attention to something special…that’s when they hit the Mr Tambourine Man cover. There’s actually a picture of me watching it, with my hands covering all of my face up to my eyes. I actually was brought to tears by the brilliant emotion they brought to a song we’ve all probably heard a thousand times. This song is why you have in-studios.”
We had actually talked about using this song on Live at KEXP Volume 2, but figured it would be impossible to get permission for it. All of the artists donate their performances for Live at KEXP – we have to get permission both from the band/label and from the publisher. Getting Bob Dylan to say yes seemed like a longshot, but we went for it anyway. In the reply it seemed that they understood KEXP and our mission, and loved Cloud Cult’s version of their song. We were blown away when they said yes.
Live at KEXP Volume 3 is available online or at any of these Seattle stores: Cellophane Square, Easy Street, Everyday Music, PCC Natural Markets, Silver Platters, and Sonic Boom Records. The only way to get Live at KEXP on vinyl is to make a contribution to KEXP! It contains two tracks not available on the CD and is a totally different listening experience, not to mention a super cool addition to your music collection!
