Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Cheryl Waters, is
White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes as performed live from Bumbershoot 2007. This particular performance struck Cheryl as one of the most beautiful and moving.
The Fleet Foxes, a Seattle quintet, have caused a stir around here since their first Seattle show. Their shows have been the vehicle for distributing EPs, EP’s produced by Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Shins, Modest Mouse), which have become a powerful word-of-mouth press machine for the band. Fleet Foxes got to show off their skills twice at this year’s Bumbershoot, playing once on the
secret special stage and once on the Sky Church stage. Both crowds were wowed by the Foxes’ harmonies and modern twist on the surfer side of ’60s psychedelic pop. Phil Ek is again on board for the band’s first full-length, label yet unknown, to be released in February 2008. You can get your fix much sooner by checking them out in Bellingham 11/7. Their MySpace page has some other great Pacific Northwest dates. See these guys in a tiny venue while you still can; that window of opportunity will soon be over. Meanwhile, this video features a Fleet Foxes performance at Neumos back in February:
