Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is
Expectations by Cut Off Your Hands from the 2007 Shaky Hands EP on I Am Sound Records.
This Auckland, New Zealand band, originally named Shaky Hands, was forced to make a change after Portland’s The Shaky Hands threatened legal action; hence, their hands were cut off. Nevertheless, Cut Off Your Hands will leave you tongue-tied. The young quartet mixes all the bliss of poppy dance-punk with aggressive garage-rock, putting their own touches on a sound that refuses to go away. The Shaky Hands EP, released last year abroad, just got its US release a month ago, just in time for the band to come rock CMJ. For anyone who got their hands on the disc early or is just itching for more, the debut LP is in the works with production being handled by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. And it appears that COYH’s success in ’07 is only going to grow in ’08 as they’ve already signed on for the Big Day Out Festival which will parade them around New Zealand and Australia. Check out their MySpace page and this video for
Expectations, which matches all the energy and zaniness of the song:
