Review Revue: Melvins’ Ozma

melvins_ozma.jpg

Let’s continue with the vinyl, shall we? Today on Review Revue, we dig into the local bins, with Ozma by the Melvins. The Melvins have been a mainstay of Northwest rock for over 20 years, and have released about that many albums, most of which are just as difficult and divisive (and totally awesome) as their second full-length album, Ozma (released on Boner Records), proved to be. Most recently they have doubled up their rhythm section with Big Business providing bass and a second drum kit as counterpoint to Dale Crover’s inspired pounding. (A) Senile Animal, featuring that lineup, was one of my favorite albums last year, and reports are that their live shows are face-meltingly good.

Opinion at KCMU was, as we’ve come to expect, divided:

“I wasn’t in Seattle during this band’s first run. [Note: unless this comment was written years later, this was only a few years after the band formed.] Hope they used to be better than this. Terrible songs - seem to go out of their way to sound bad. I found it very dull and repetitive. Someone set me straight if I’m missing something.”

And the setting-straight commences:

“Robert, you’re missing something.”

“Sounds too much like Clive Product to me!”

“Robert - you know NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC. xxxooo Melvins Boner Comment”

“L? What is this doing in L? The Melvins are Heavy!”

Aside from the usual snarking, we also have some helpful info for the DJs, which these comments are often good for:

“‘Love Thing’ is ‘Love Theme from Kiss,’ note for note.”

“New on CD (with the first LP)! In new releases.”

“KCMU welcomes to The Vogue - April 25th 1990.”

Levi, these are so good. This is my Boner Comment. Is Melvi plural for Melvins? Like, look at the pack of Melvi. Similar to Moose. Look at all the Melvi.
