from the Raven & Chimes tour blog
Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is This Is Where We Are
by Ravens & Chimes from their 2007 debut Reichenbach Falls on Better Looking Records.
As bands experiment with different and more varied instrumentation, few are able to keep it all together and create anything but a cheap ripoff. Ravens & Chimes transcend all of that on this debut album; serenading and belting out bookish lyrics through beautiful boy-girl vocals, R&C know when and how to turn up the heat. When the band’s original name, Lost At Sea, was called into question, the move was made to Ravens & Chimes, more suited to their melancholy-meets-perky-indie-pop sound. From down and out to up and at ‘em, R&C was formed by a couple of homeless NYU post-grads talented enough to land recording sessions with Howard Bilerman, the man behind Arcade Fire’s Funeral and Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Now that the record is out, they’ve slayed the CMJ crowds and are headed for the Midwest, one can only hope the Pacific Northwest holds a place in their collective psyche. For updates, check out their website and MySpace page, which currently features a cover of Leonard Cohen’s So Long Marianne
