Every Friday, we deliver a different song from a local performer as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Say It Once
by Seattle’s The Little Penguins from their self-released 2007 album Welcome to the Celebration.
The Little Penguins create a casually dramatic cocktail of straight forward pop-rock and punk, utilizing crisp indie guitars, diverse song structures, and the versatile vocals of Will Hallauer, aka Will Penguin. Normally a drummer for Seattle band The Turn-Ons, Hallauer steps to the front of the stage and is joined by fellow Little Penguins Andrew Gaskin on bass, Jerry Peerson on piano, guitar, and vocals, and Garrett Croxon, formerly of Fleet Foxes, behind the kit. After self-releasing their debut earlier this summer, produced by fellow Turn-On Erik Blood, the band toured around Washington State and Portland handing out and selling CDs. They have several shows scheduled for December, including 12/6 at the Sunset. Waddle over to their MySpace page the other local dates, and check out these photos by Scott Steinbright from their recent performance in the KEXP studio:
