Haiku Review: KEXP’s 5th Annual Yule Benefit

A great sage of our time!

Remember writing haiku in your elementary school language arts classes? Good times, right? Not until Dada has poetry been more accessible to the masses — you only need to count syllables! First line, five. Second line, seven. Third, five again. Simple!

Of course, there is an art to creating sensually evocative imagery with such brevity — but who cares? Leave that to the stuffed shirts. Here at KEXP, we just want to write silly haiku about about bands, albums, live performances, anything music-related, and we’d like you to join us.

The DJs, staff, interns, and volunteers have contributed to a request for any haiku related to the 5th Annual Yule Benefit on Saturday night. Here’s a sampling from the station. Leave a comment below with your own Yule Benefit haiku and look for more episodes of Haiku Review to follow:

Driving power chords
The Valley from Seattle
Kicks my ass soundly

Rischel Granquist

The Valley are so
very very very loud
sexy bass player

Michele Myers

The Feral Children
Screamed like raging maniacs
Not for feint of heart

Damian Bradley

Dead Confederate
Metal-scorched Replacements songs
My brain is molten

Michele Myers

Yeasayer rocked it
Three part harmonies are boss
Lovely with whiskey

Melissa Trejo

brooklyn badasses
west coast virgins no more
deflowered, success!

Audrey Klammer

No need to worry!
Fantastic tribal-gospel
sounds from Yeasayer

Andy Boyd

Yule did not I see
Family dinner, my house
Heard folks were quite drunk

Sara Green Williams

Wow, that Audrey, she sure is a great haiku writer! Of course I am a different Audrey, otherwise that would just be silly and vain.
