Today I met one of my heroes…Sharon Jones. I MC’d the VIP Club Concert today at the Triple Door. We hold these concerts for KEXP members and staff every coupla months. I’ve seen The Black Angels, Morcheeba, Gomez, Sufjan Stevens and The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at these events. But I was especially excited about Sharon Jones.
She’s like the female James Brown! Not only is she the kind of singer I dream of being…(she goes from velvety smooth to this soft belting style, and every pitch is perfect, every note is planned with finesse) but she is also a great dancer!
The band who play behind her are a top-notch group in their own right. The Dap-Kings are the perfect funk machine. The horns are so tight and sparse and powerful. The bass, conga and drums are so solid and funky… and the guitars have the warmest wah wah sound. The Dap-Kings also play with Amy Winehouse.
I see lots of great bands come through the station. And I am rarely starstruck, but with Sharon I felt a bit nervous… She is who I’d like to be in 20 years. You can see my shy side in this picture. I’m actually shaking a little. Crazy. If you ever get a chance to see Sharon live, I highly recommend it.
