Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Little Brother (Electric)
by Grizzly Bear from the 2007 Friend EP on Warp.
Grizzly Bear, one of the most lauded bands of the past year, used this EP as an opportunity to showcase their own work as well as the influence they’ve had on newly gathered friends. CSS, Band of Horses, and Atlas Sound all contribute covers of prominent Grizzly Bear songs while the band’s own remakes are totally reinvented. This track, a remake of its Yellow House predecessor, is immediately gratifying and serves as the group’s most accessible yet non-compromising song to date. Put simply, the Friend EP is stunning, giving listeners all the more reason to believe the hype. The band has no tour dates on their current itinerary, but Daniel Rossen is scheduled to perform at LA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall on January 8th. For your Grizzly Bear fix, check out their MySpace page, but be sure not to miss their more inciteful blog. Meanwhile, the following video shows the whole band’s take on Deep Blue Sea
while the EP features Daniel Rossen’s solo home demo version:
