Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is
Slippershell by Kristin Hersh, a song recorded and available on the CASH Music website.
Kristin Hersh first made a name for herself by forming the college radio phenom Throwing Muses. She has since been known as a forthright singer and lyricist. Whether for the Muses, her more rockin’ 2003 startup, 50 Foot Wave or for her mellower solo material, Hersh puts together tracks with heavily contrasting tempos, surprising sonic elements and an often eerie surrealism. Her most recent project is the CASH Music website, a place for artists to post and share their work through Creative Commons licensing. Since the site went up two months ago, Hersh has posted two new songs, including the one featured here, that are set up to be remixed and reshared as well as simply downloaded. For more about the project and what Hersh has been up to, check out this recent interview on the KEXP blog. Now once you’re done messing around with the latest version of Guitar Hero, why don’t you head to the CASH site and lay down some real guitar to go along with Hersh’s on the newly posted
Torque. Still there? Here’s a video for the unforgettable
Your Ghost from Hersh’s debut album Hips and Makers:
