Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “Northwestern Girls” by Say Hi from upcoming release The Wishes And The Glitch on Euphobia Records.
Say Hi – Northwestern Girls (MP3)
If the voice sounds familiar, it probably is — Eric Elbogen released four records under the name Say Hi To Your Mom before truncating the band name for his fifth release, The Wishes And The Glitch. Elbogen is joined by Nouela Johnston (Mon Frere) on vocals for the shimmering slice of torque that is “Northwestern Girls,” and that vocal tandem is probably what brings on the Stars comparisons I’ve seen bandied about. Not sure I buy ‘em, though — Stars always seem fully under control, disciplined for maximum dramatic impact, but when Elbogen’s voice cracks reaching for the high notes on “Northwestern Girls”‘ oft-repeated line “it must be in the air here,” he takes the song to that sublime place where technique gives way to emotion. Be sure to check out Say Hi at the Chop Suey on April 3 and look for updates on their MySpace page. Here’s the song performed live last November at the Knitting Factory:
