Torn Blue Foam Couch by Grand Archives from the 2008 self-titled album on Sub Pop.
Thinking back on the genesis of this band -- which formed at a significant peak in Band of Horses’ popularity -- it seemed a lingering comparativeness would linger until one band faltered. But in actuality Grand Archives, the dream child of BoH cofounder Mat Brooke, were destined for success almost before they got started. Their early demos as simply Archives were put on a pedestal until their debut album came along to overstep most expectations. The band has since grown from a foursome to a quintet though they maintain the same four-part harmonies that would make the early Beach Boys proud. At times trapped in the ’70s folk era and other times unmistakably modern, this long-awaited debut is never out of place. Read a review on the KEXP Blog of their recent performance at the Triple Door in which they treated audience members to the entire album, front to back. The band is currently gravitating towards Austin, TX, for SXSW where they’ll play a typically hectic schedule.
