Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection is “Aly, Walk With Me” by the Raveonettes, from their new album Lust Lust Lust. KEXP is at SxSW this week –- and will be broadcasting an exclusive live set from the band on Saturday at 6:oo PM , Austin time!
The band hit Seattle as well — mere days ago — and dang if I’m not still kicking myself for missing the show. The Raveonettes’ spooky-ass fuzz noir is beyond infectious, and these Danes have soundtracked some serious miles with me on the bus via the trusty iPod. Influences are obvious, and the band cites them without hesitation –- the Velvets, Buddy Holly, the Ronettes (the last two of which the band combine to form their name.) The thing is, it all works –- Sharin Foo’s vocals are drenched in reverb to femme fatale perfection, and both Foo and guitarist Sune Rose Wagner coax some tasty surf-twang from those guitars. It all sits perfectly atop the Mary Chain-esque bed of white noise and sexy rhythmic strut that is “Aly, Walk With Me.”
“Aly, Walk with Me” live at Neumo’s last Sunday night
