Was it really eighteen years ago that The Breeders made their debut with Pod? Queen Breeder Kim Deal was also a Pixie at the time, and this was meant to be a side project with Tanya Donnelly, formerly of the Throwing Muses. Donnelly’s input faded quickly, the Pixies dissolved, and by the time 1993’s Last Splash came out, The Breeders were Kim’s main deal. But the title of Last Splash began to sound oddly prophetic; Breeders bassist Kelley Deal wrestled with drug addiction, and sister Kim detoured with another new band titled Tammy and the Amps. Kelley cleaned up and formed a band with former Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach (now that’s a pairing made in Chuck Klosterman Heaven), but in the end it all came back to The Breeders. The Deal sisters, along with Jose Medeles and Carrie Bradley, are back in Breeder mode with new CD Mountain Battles, and it’s our good fortune they made time to stop by and visit with KEXP for a fun, energetic, raw session… and without overdubs!
