Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is
I Like It, I Love It by Lyrics Born from the forthcoming album Everywhere At Once on Anti-.
Since forming the groundbreaking Solesides label in the mid-90s alongside DJ Shadow, Gift of Gab, and other prominent Bay Area artists, Tom Shimura, aka Lyrics Born, has had unmitigated success as a solo artist. Since Later That Day dropped in ’03, LB has been involved with clever licensing deals that have put him on your television, on your gaming system, and of course, heavy on your FM dial. For the upcoming release, LB builds on the success of his ’06 live album by bringing his touring band into the studio and relying less on drum machines and other programmed sounds. One constant from his previous records is that LB continues his reign as king of mashing funk and hip-hop, exploding the limits of the spectrum with his vocal range and prowess. Everywhere at Once is yet another step forward for one of the greatest independent hip-hop artists of all time. Snag the album when it appears in stores 4/22 in preparation of the show at Neumo’s 4/27. Before then, catch up on the making of the new album on LB’s video blog and spend a little time shoe shopping with the artist in this video:
