Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday, the Song of the Day podcast spotlights Northwest musicians. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is My Kind of People
by Seattle band Man Plus, available on their second, self-released full-length album Hungarian Suicide Songbook.
If you were to leave today on a voyage to Mars (or just spend the evening hanging out in your room), you might want to grab a copy of Man Plus‘ My Kind of People
for the journey. The song’s pop rhythms have the power to lift you out of a funk, but its dark lyrics let you retain some of the angst. Jared Mills’ husky repetitive lyrics will have you singing along while the high energy guitar riffs and spacey synths will get your toes tapping. Check out Man Plus around town including a gig at Neumo’s on 4/19 with The Teenagers and The Handsome Furs and also at KEXP’s Ballard Days on 5/9 at the Sunset Tavern. You can find more dates at the band’s MySpace page. Here’s a video for “Mexican Moon” from the new album:

Awesome! These guys are a big kick and I can’t get enough of the manic depressive thing they’ve got going on. I predict big things: THE band to watch in 2008!
