Mick Jones, currently of Carbon/Silicon but best known as the guitarist of a lil’ band called The Clash, will be presented with the “Inspiration Award” at the first ever NME Awards USA ceremony next week in Los Angeles. Jones and his new crew will perform, and even if you aren’t an Angeleno, you can check it out — the NME MySpace Page will be broadcasting the show. A few (okay, more than a few) choice words from NME editor Conor McNicholas: “The Inspiration Award is hotly debated amongst the NME editors, but the decision we reached was unanimous — Mick Jones is a true hero to NME.” The Clash were the magnificent reason most of us got into alternative music in the first place, but Mick has never been one to rest on his laurels. With Big Audio Dynamite, he pioneered sampling techniques and helped introduce hip-hop to reggae and rock. And still not content with that, he now fronts Carbon/Silicon, discovering yet more new ways to excite us. Mick is an innovator, a visionary, a class songwriter, a great singer and a demon guitarist, but that’s not all. He truly is an inspiration. His restless spirit recently drew him to produce The Libertines and to collaborate with Richard Archer of Hard-Fi among others — Mick providing the young head on old shoulders… or should that be the other way round?” Well, should it? Tune in next week and see!
